Oranges and Lemons

Posted by
It has been a long time since I blogged. There is a reason for this and it has been hard to decide if I should talk about something so personal on my professional website. However, today is a good day to explain. Today I am launching a new section on my website, a section not to do with my jewellery, but a place where I can try to raise money to support mental health charities.

Two and a half years ago I lost my eldest son, Josef, to suicide. He was studying art at university and he was 22 years old. There is no upside, no resolution and there will be no end to missing him. He was a wonderful, talented, kind human being and he suffered from depression and it killed him. He died, leaving behind so little of his art work, I wanted so much to make him matter, and to do something, anything to help prevent other young people and their families from suffering the same fate.

So, at last Oranges and Lemons has come into realisation. It is named for one of the finished pieces he left behind which was an illustration for the poem, ‘Two Trees’ by Don Paterson and which is the first piece available to buy. It is also because citrus fruits are often recommended as something you can eat and smell which can help combat low mood, so it seemed appropriate.

I have contacted Don Paterson and he has very kindly allowed me to use the words from his poem in the works for sale, Josef would have been very proud.

Wow.i came across you on Twitter and was drawn to your work. The creativity and authenticity is simply stunning. Now reading this, I feel an even stronger connection mental health has effected many members of my family and what you have gone through is frankly, my worst nightmare. Oranges and Lemons is a perfect and poignant tribute to your son and I admire you for sharing it. Josef definitely still matters and part of him lives on through you and your beautiful work.
